New presentation of the permanent collection of the Paris Museum of Modern Art

After several months of work, the Museum of Modern Art of the City of Paris, now known as the Museum of Modern Art of Paris, is showing a new selection from its permanent collections in renovated spaces, entitled La vie moderne. Nouvelle présentation des collections (‘Modern Life: A New Presentation of the Collections’).

Alongside Pierre Soulages, Judith Reigl, Maria-Eva Bergman, Sam Francis and Simon Hantaï, Zao Wou-Ki is represented in two works. 06.01.68 (260 x 200 cm), a purchase made by the City of Paris in 1971; representative of his large-scale works of the 1960s.

Hommage à Henri Matisse I – 02.02.86 (162 x 130 cm) from 1986, was donated by Françoise Marquet-Zao in 2019. It was inspired by the well-known Porte-fenêtre à Collioure painted in 1914 by Matisse, on show as part of the Museum of Modern Art’s new display of its permanent collections and testament to the great respect Zao Wou-Ki held for an artist he considered to be one of the most important of the 20th century.

Shown at Zao Wou-Ki’s second personal exhibition at the Galerie de France in June-July 1960, the canvas was bought by the French State afterwards and given to the National Museum of Modern Art in 1961.
