Stretched between two abysses, Chinese tradition and Western modernism, Zao Wou-Ki fought his Great Fight for a hopeless beauty, between the ebb and flow of space and time. Deeply disturbed by American Action painting, but also by Vareze’s music of sounds, his ‘transreal’ art imposes its swirling infinite in the series of cosmic large formats he painted between 1956 and 2003. They are superbly displayed at the Museum of Modern Art of the City of Paris, five years after the death of the artist.
