Françoise Marquet-Zao has chosen to transform the deposit of this large painting, decided in January of 2015, into a donation to the Cantonal Museum of Fine Arts of Lausanne. She thus wishes to sanctify this painting very near and dear to her husband’s heart.
Painted in 1964, the ‘Tribute to Edgar Varese’ has been the privileged witness of the friendship linking Zao Wou-Ki to the American composer he met in 1954 in Paris. It is also a large painting (225 x 345 cm) very symbolic of his work in the 60’s, after his discovery of the theater and arts scene in New York.
The donation was made in February 2015 and the painting has officially been unveiled in November 2015. It is exhibited at the Pierre Gianadda Foundation in Martigny, in the Valais Canton in Switzerland, on the occasion of the retrospective dedicated to Zao Wou-Ki (December 2015 – June 2016).
